Gmic Colorize-Comics working in Krita

Thanks to the sponsored work by Lukáš Tvrdý, we now have G’mic working directly inside Krita in current git master version !!
There are still a few bugs and missing features, but a lot of filters can work, including “Colorize Comics”.
Here’s a little example with a frame from “Freestyle Fiction” part2 (to be released in a few days 😉 ), with detailed steps and settings that I’ve used.

-First, make a file with your artline layer on top, a layer with color spots below, and another empty layer that’ll recieve the extrapolated colors.
(note that for now, if you want to use a filter that’s supposed to create new layers for the result, you have to create manually those extra empty layers in place before to run gmic action)
-In the Layer menu, select “Apply G’mic action”.
-In G’mic’s window, on the left side, select Input: All and Output: In place.
-select “Black & white” : Colorize [comics] filter
-In Layers ordering part, select “lineart + color spots + extrapolated colors” for both input and output layers.
-I did set smoothness to 0.02 (default is 0.05, lower values makes thin details more accurate, bigger values enhance “open lines” tolerance).

See the result:

gmic colorize Krita result

(note: screenshots size ~25% of original resolution.. )

So if you can’t wait to test G’mic in Krita, go get the development version and have some fun (see this page for detailed build instructions, or use the Krita Lime ppa for ubuntu based ditributions), or wait for next 2.8 release later. And don’t forget to report any issue you may find in the bugtracker, and to share your results!

Freestyle Fiction: first pages update

Here is an update of the first pages of my new comics project. I released those last month in french only, and with almost only “auto-colors” (with the new G’mic filter…).
So I’ve updated the colors adding some simple shadings, and added the english version for all the non-frenchies ;.)

The next pages are not ready yet but have made good progress, stay tuned for next news!

A great and unexpected first Akademy experience

I’m back now from Akademy 2013 in Bilbao. It was a great event where I could meet so much great people from the KDE community. The kind of moment you don’t sleep a lot as there are always nice people to share a cool moment, being communicative and creative, and that at the end you feel like: “ho, no, it’s already the end!” 😉

I learned a lot with all the interesting talks the first 2 days, made a demo presentation about Krita history and fast progress on Sunday morning, had the great surprise to recieve one of this year’s Akademy awards for my work on “shaping the future and community of Krita”, again learned a lot during the BOFs and workshop during the week, and had an incredibly good time, so much thanks to the local team who did a perfect work.

You can find links to lot of nice photos from the event here.
The talks were recorded so my Krita demo should be available on the web soon, until then is already available on the web with all other videos since a few days, good work! And here are a few photos of it:

The fill tool made good progress too, with auto grow/shrink option and improved speed performance…

Now time to get back to work, to clear this big todo list I filed there..
And see you there next year for sure!

New comics project

comics preview

Finally, after quite a long time, here are the first pages of my new comics project, using Krita development version from scratch (well, almost only as you’ll see further). So enjoy, it’s only a few pages for now but hopefuly the next parts will come faster. I made only French version for now, I’ll publish english version soon. Original files are A4 600dpi, but the images inside the PDF are resized to 300dpi to make it lighter to download.

File size: 3,6Mio

I’ve chosen to release it on a Creative-Commons BY-SA license. So we can really call it a free and open comics, as it will easily allow daptations and spin-offs of all kinds from anyone (after a few more pages published, of course for now not enough of the story is told to make some big related project..).

Also at the same time I’m happy to tell I’ve decided to re-license all of my available work that was CreativeCommons-BY-NC-ND or NC-SA to CC-BY-SA. This includes of course the parts of “Comics with Krita” content that was using those license.. So now it’s completly free, which is much better 😉

A special thanks to David Tschumperlé for his work on the “comics color” G’mic filter which is an awesome time saver. As I said above, here I mostly used Krita but also used this G’mic filter with Gimp. But hopefuly we’ll soon see G’mic integrated directly in Krita (thanks to the great work in progress by Lukáš Tvrdý 😉 ), so I won’t need to switch anymore for this.

I’m Going to Akademy 2013

This year for the first time I’ll go to Akademy, the annual world summit of KDE. It will take place in Bilbao, from 13th to 19th of July.
There I’ll make a talk about “Krita progress”, showing the cool new features that can help a lot for comics and animation workflow.

Akademy 2013

Check the full program here, and if you plan to come, register here.

See you there!

Here’s another illustration I posted on Krita forum a few weeks ago, which I made as a style-test for the next little comics project I’ve started to work on. By the way, it should be ready before the end of this month if everything goes well, so stay tuned 😉
